Callum and Susie's Brief Relationship

The Secret Vampire

Callum and Susie's Brief Relationship is a short, unstable intimacy formed in the aftermath of Susie's transformation and Carmilla's death. Callum briefly turns to Susie while consumed by anger at Celeste, and Susie mistakes their encounter for the beginning of a bond; his immediate retreat, and her later use of their intimacy as leverage, expose how differently they understand what happened.

Formation and Unequal Expectations

The relationship begins after Susie has become a Vampire and is struggling with the urge to feed. Callum finds her killing people and persuades her to stop, warning that her actions put Vampires at risk. On a hilltop, Susie speaks of her life as over: she cannot return to college or resume an ordinary human existence. Callum tries to comfort her, and she kisses him. He stops the kiss and makes clear that he likes her only as a friend, adding that she will find her mate. He then intends to call Celeste to collect her. In this first encounter, Callum offers concern without romantic commitment, while Susie reaches for closeness at a moment when her future seems to have vanished.

That distinction does not hold. After Callum turns against Celeste, Susie follows and watches her with Damien, privately resolving to make Callum hers. Later, she seeks Callum out while he is training. She offers to help him get revenge and justice for Carmilla, tying her appeal directly to his bereavement and his conviction that Celeste is responsible. Callum pins her against the wall, and they kiss passionately before he carries her to bed. The scene makes their attraction unmistakable, but its circumstances are volatile: Susie presents herself as an ally in Callum's revenge, and Callum is acting from anger over his mother's death.

Intimacy and Retraction

The next morning, Susie is wearing Callum's shirt and holding a bottle of blood. She treats the previous night as something exciting and meaningful, but Callum asks what she is doing there and then pushes her away when she tries to kiss him. He calls the encounter a mistake, attributing it to his anger, and privately wonders why it feels as though he has cheated on Celeste. His response reveals that the physical encounter has not displaced his emotional attachment to Celeste; Susie, by contrast, leaves annoyed and continues to pursue him.

The aftermath does not erase what happened. At college, Callum and Celeste share a moment of eye contact, and Callum later watches her with Damien jealously. Susie's subsequent conduct shows that she regards her intimacy with Callum as a continuing claim rather than a regretted episode. When Callum rejects her and tells her he does not love her, she confronts him with the fact that they have slept together and had an intimate relationship, threatening to expose this to Celeste. The disclosure turns their private encounter into a weapon in the conflict between Callum, Celeste, and Susie.

Jealousy and Conflict

Susie's possessiveness intensifies as Callum's relationship with Celeste becomes harder to deny. Damien tells Susie that Celeste and Callum are soulmates, but Susie insists that Callum will realize that she and he belong together. Her belief clashes with Callum's repeated rejection and with the soulmate bond attributed to him and Celeste. Rather than accepting that mismatch, Susie casts Celeste as a rival who is taking Callum from her.

Callum responds to Susie's attempt to interfere with a threat. When she corners him and says Celeste will not want him after learning about their intimacy, he grabs her by the throat and warns her not to come between him and Celeste. The encounter shows how far their brief relationship has deteriorated: what began with a kiss after Callum tried to comfort Susie becomes a struggle over control, jealousy, and the consequences of their night together. Their intimacy gives Susie a means to wound Callum, but it does not give her the reciprocal love she wants.

Remorse and Resolution

Susie's fixation eventually breaks during her confrontation with Celeste. Celeste insists that she does not want to fight and still loves Susie as her sister, while also telling her that Callum loves someone else. Susie begins to cry and recalls their dead mother and Brianna; as her humanity returns, she apologizes for how she has been acting. She then agrees to help stop Samara. This shift does not explicitly restore a romance between Susie and Callum: the evidence shows a change in Susie's state and loyalties, not a renewed commitment between them.

The relationship's ending is therefore defined by recognition rather than romantic fulfillment. Susie's earlier effort to make Callum hers gives way to remorse and cooperation, while Callum's attachment remains directed toward Celeste. Their brief intimacy matters because it becomes both a consequence of Callum's grief-driven revenge and a source of leverage in Susie's rivalry with Celeste. Once Susie turns away from that rivalry, the relationship loses its purpose as a claim on Callum and remains a damaging, temporary episode in the larger conflict.
